HYDRATE | Chapter 3 in Your Vitality Journey

by | Mar 13, 2025

Hydrate between meals with filtered water. But at mealtime let your stomach do its thing.

We’ve all heard the standard advice: “Drink eight glasses of water a day.” But what if hydration was about more than just a number? What if how and when you drink water played just as big a role in your health as the amount? In Chapter 3 of Your Vitality Guide, we go beyond surface recommendations to explore the deeper relationship between hydration and vitality.

Water is literally life. Every reaction in your body depends on it. But did you know that the quality of your water and your drinking habits can impact digestion, energy levels, and even gut health? This chapter is designed to help you refine your approach to hydration so your body thrives.

Section 1: Water Habits – Quality Over Quantity

Is tap water safe to drink?

That depends. Your location and your body’s adaptability influence whether tap water is “safe.” But let’s go deeper: Can you drink it? Sure. Should you? That’s another question.

If you have access to a filtration system, the biggest reason to use it isn’t for you, it’s for your probiotics. Your gut microbiome, a delicate balance of helpful and harmful bacteria, is affected by what you consume daily. Tap water often contains chlorine and other byproducts that can stress your gut flora. Filtering your water supports the beneficial bacteria that help with digestion, immunity, and overall well-being.

Gut Imbalances | Why You Might Want to Protect Your Probiotics

Have you ever connected these symptoms to your water habits?

  • Fatigue or sluggishness
  • Cravings for sugar, bread, or alcohol
  • Headaches or brain fog
  • Mood swings or irritability
  • Indigestion, bloating, or gas

In holistic nutrition, we don’t just look at symptoms in isolation—we look at patterns. Many of these issues stem from an imbalance called candidiasis, where an overgrowth of Candida yeast in the gut disrupts digestion, energy, and mental clarity.

A journal prompt from Chapter 3:

Recall your last major life event. What changes occurred in your energy level, cravings, digestion, or overall vitality during that time? You might go with the flow, but your gut bugs may be overwhelmed by changing course.

Your Water Lifestyle: Simple Changes, Big Impact

If you’re ready to optimize your hydration habits, a great starting point is a simple at-home filtration system paired with a reusable water bottle. A carbon filter is all you need to remove chlorine and other byproducts that affect your microbiome. While bottled water is sometimes necessary, it’s not ideal for the environment, your health, or your wallet.

Currently, I use a jug with interchangeable filters that last 60 days, and my next gift to myself will be a glass countertop unit.*

Setting SMART hydration goals can help you make sustainable, practical changes. How does healthy, holistic hydration fit into your unique lifestyle?

Section 2: Timing and Absorption – When and How You Drink Matters

Water Digestion: Absorbing vs. Flushing

Do you drink plenty of water but still feel dehydrated? Do you find yourself peeing constantly, yet always thirsty? Or do you rarely crave water, finding it boring?

These common hydration hurdles have solutions. In Chapter 3, we explore why some people struggle with water absorption, what causes bloating after drinking water, and simple ways to make hydration more enjoyable (yes, including easy water-enhancing recipes!).

Water & Your Body’s Natural Rhythm

Water isn’t just a passive resource, it’s an active force that fuels every process in your body. Your body is about 60% water, with the brain and heart containing up to 73%. The more you understand its role, the easier it is to form habits that truly nourish you.

One powerful tool we introduce in Chapter 3 is journaling with gratitude for water, a mindfulness practice that helps reinforce hydration as a self-care ritual rather than a chore.

Stomach Function & Water: Don’t Put Out Your Digestive Fire

Here’s where things get even juicier. In Chapter 2 (Mindful), we explored how digestion starts with awareness. Chapter 3 builds on this with the concept of jatharagni, an Ayurvedic teaching that likens digestion to a fire. Drinking too much water—especially cold water—before or during meals can weaken digestion by diluting stomach acids.

If you experience:

  • Excessive gas or bloating after eating
  • Fatigue after meals (especially high-protein meals)
  • Burping or belching frequently
  • Long-lasting feelings of fullness

…you may be unintentionally dampening your digestive fire. The Chapter 3 workbook guides you in fine-tuning your hydration habits so your digestion operates at peak performance.

Your Personalized Hydration Plan

To wrap up, Chapter 3 includes a customizable formula for your ideal daily water intake, not just based on body weight, but also on lifestyle, activity levels, and personal health needs.

By the end of this chapter, you’ll:

  • Understand what’s actually in your water (and how it affects your health)
  • Recognize signs of hydration imbalances
  • Learn when and how to drink water for optimal absorption
  • Set personalized, sustainable hydration goals
